Traditionally, small amounts of consecrated rice grain is essential for making a symbolic mandala offering when one requests teachings and/or empowerment. Small handfuls of rice, accompanied by verses of auspiciousness or “Tashi Sho” prayers, are tossed in the air when celebrating the conclusion of an important sadhana practice. The rice should be cleansed of any stones or debris, rinsed in saffron water to imbue a slightly golden hue, dried and stored in a small container kept close at hand. Moreover, high Lamas scatter blessed rice on the canvas when consecrating a thangka painting.
